In Ansalon, you can choose to play one of a number of races, from plain-jane Human to a variety of Elves (Silvanesti, Dargonesti, etc.) to a member of the Dwarven family to Minotaur to Gnome to Kender. Below is more detailed information on the races available for play on Ansalon. Enjoy!
Human
Humans are the most common race in the world, and make up the majority of adventurers. Although they have no special talents like the other races, they are more versitile, being skilled in all four classes. Humans may also train their primary stat higher than most other races. Humans also have lower creation points (less exp per level) than most races, and start with 2 additional train points. Nationalities include: Ergothian, Solamnic, Nerakan, Que-Shu (or Plainsman), Abanasinian, Arktos, Highlander, Ice Folk, Nordmaarian, Istarian, Palanthian and more. Use the 'whotext' command to change yours.
Half-Elf
Half-Elves strongly resemble the racial stock of their elven parent, but they are generally more stocky than most elves. While almost universally handsome or beautiful, they lack the grace of their elven parentage. Half-Elves are outcasts from the societies of both their parents. There is no society that consists soley of half-elves as they are primarly loners. As a result of this, half-elves have picked up on their human ancestrial trait of being a 'jack of all trades' and are skilled in a variety of different disiplines.
Elves
Elves are slightly taller than humans, but have a much lighter build. They lack the strength and stamina of the other races, but are far more agile, both in body and mind.
Elves resist charm spells most effectively, due to their magical nature. However, they are burned by the touch of iron, and so are barred from the use of iron or steel in their adventuring careers. Elves are notoriously hard to spot, and so elven warriors and thieves recieve the sneak and hiding automatically. They may see in the dark with infravision.
Silvanesti Elf

The Silvanesti are a fair-skinned race with eyes of blue or brown and hair ranging from light brown to blonde-white. Hazel eyes are a symbol of the line of Silvanos. The silvanesti prefer loose garments, flowing robes and capes.
The Silvanesti elves are a prejudiced people, intolerant of other races and customs, which are seen by the Silvanesti as being highly inferior to their own. Racial purity is a large part of the Silvanesti mindset.
Silvanesti society leans heavily towards the intellectual and scholarly, therefore they make excellent mages and clerics. However, because of the rigidly defined society, thieving is out of the question, and on account of their (relatively) slight build, the don't end up being as effective warriors as some of the other hardier races.
Qualinesti Elf

The Qualinesti are slightly smaller and darker than the Silvanesti. Their hair ranges from honey-brown to blond, and their eyes are blue or brown. They prefer woven slaks and jerkins for men, long dresses for women.
The Qualinesti are more friendly than the Silvanesti. They have traded more openly with other races and even constructed a trade center in conjunction with the Mountain Dwarves. The only barrier to improved relations with humans, is the elves' dislike of interracial marriages.
Because the Qualinesti society is far less structured than that of their Silvanesti cousins, all classes are available to the young Qualinesti Elf for study. However, just like the Silvanesti, their (relatively) slight build prevents them from becoming extremely effective warriors.
Kagonesti Elf

The Kagonesti elves are about the same size as the Silvanesti and Qualinesti, but they are much more muscular. They are very tan and draw designes on their faces and exposed flesh with clay and paints. Their hair is dark, ranging from black to light brown, with a rare throwback to the silvery white of their ancestors. Their eyes are hazel.
The Kagonesti are decendants of Silvanesti and Qualinesti elves who left those nations centuries ago to live in harmony with the wild. They believe that harmony with nature is the key to a ful and happy life. And while they respect nature in all its forms, they also feel it can be used to further the purposes and well-being of the tribe.
Because of their portable tribe-based culture, Kagonesti are skilled warriors and thieves. Every tribe has at most a couple of shamans (clerics), but these are rare. Because of their mobile and wild nature, it is not in their nature to study enough to master the other magical arts.
Dimernesti Elf and Dargonesti Elf

The Dimernesti and Dargonesti are races of Sea Elves, groups that separated radically from the elven land races during the Age of Dreams. They have been few in number ever since the devastation of the Cataclysm in which many of their citadels and homes were destroyed. They can breath both air and water and have light bluish skin and webbed fingers.
The Dimernesti are also called Shoal Elves, as they inhabit the shallows of many coastlines. Wheras the Dargonesti, or Deep Elves, inhabit the sea floors.
The Sea Elves see no need for Thievery, but are skilled at all other disiplines.
Dwarves
Dwarves are short, stocky demi-humans, known for foul temper and great stamina. Dwarves have high strength and constitution, but poor dexterity. They are not as smart as humans, but are usually wiser due to their long lifespans.
Dwarves are very resistant to poison and disease, but cannot swim, and so are very vulnerable to drowning. They recieve the berserk skill for free (if warriors), and can see in the dark with infravision.
Hylar "Highest" (High Dwarf)

Mountain dwarves have light brown skin and smooth cheeks and bright eyes. Their hair is brown, black gray or occasionally white. The Mountain dwarves consider themselves the only true dwarves. They delve deep into their subterranian realms in search of ever more wealth.
Hylar dwarves prefer to be warriors, but are also skilled at thivery and the clerical arts.
Daegar "Deepest" (Dark Dwarf)

During the Age of Dreams, the Daegar were a noble clan who fought on the side
of the Hylar and their cousins the Daewar. After joining sides with the rebel
Theiwar, the Daegar were banished into the deep undermountain. By the middle
of the Age of Might, the Daegar intermarried with the Theiwar and became like
them. Other clans often call the Daegar "Dewar" a combination of the two.
Daegar make excellent thieves.
Theiwar "Thankless" (Dark Dwarf)

Theiwar are the dark dwarves. Conniving and scheming, Theiwar are always looking for ways to further their own evil self interest. Theiwar prefer the dark dwellings of Thorbardin, and are easily distinguishable from other dwarves because of their paler complexions, larger eyes and their ability to use magic.
Neidar "Nearest" (Hill Dwarf)

Hill dwarves have deep tan to light brown skin and ruddy cheeks and bright eyes. They have deep voices and actually sing quite well. Hill dwarves are looked down upon by the Mountain dwarves, who consider them exiles from the Mountains.
Hill dwarves have small communities that live in above-ground villages. Unmarried hill dwarves often set out on their own, only occasionally returning to their original clan. This makes the Neidar society more warrior based, with some clerics and a few thieves mixed in. But all dwarves look scornfully on the practice of wizardly magic.
Klar (Wild Dwarf)

The Klar were a clan of hill dwarves trapped inside Thorbardin during the
Cataclysm and not allowed to leave the mountain kingdoms when the dwarven
kingdom was sealed from teh inside. As a clan, they are known for
wild-looking eyes and wiry beards, though in truth their reputation as madmen
is largely undeserved. Klar make excellent warriors, thieves and rangers.
Aghar "Anguished" (Gully Dwarf)

Gully dwarves are short, squat demi-humans, averaging four feet in height. Aghar are physically much like other dwarves, except that they are often covered with scars, boils, sores, and filth due to their living conditions. Gully dwarves don't appear to be as heavy and stocky as the other races of dwarves. They also have narrower fingers and limbs.
Gully dwarves are the product of interracial marriages between gnomes and dwarves, retaining none of the better qualities of either race. Further intermarriages were banned by dwarven andn gnomish societies, and members of this new race were driven out of their clans, particuarly by the dwarves, who regarded them as a blight.
Though derided by the other (more) intelligent races, gully dwarves continue to thrive under conditions that would have broken many others. Gully dwarves don't have an easy time with any classes' skills, though pilfering seems to fit them best. But their intelligence is just two low to grasp the complicated concepts required for wizardry.
Goblin
Goblins are short, wiry creatures. None too bright, they excel at fighting and thieving. Gobin mages and clerics (shamans) are very rare and find it difficult to master basic spells and prayers that more "intelligent" races learn with ease.
Goblins are very resistant to poison and disease, but are vulnerable to sunlight. These characteristics come from communal living, typically in underground warrens. However, they can see in the dark very easily.
Hobgoblin
Hobgoblins are huge, stupid goblins. They were born/bred to be warriors and just are not capable of much else. They would find it difficult (if not impossible) to master the intricate rituals necessary to cast any but the most rudimentary spell or prayer. Although their dexterity is not necessarily in the 'agile' category, many a thief has put bread on the table with brute strength.
Hobgoblins are very resistant to poison and disease, but are vulnerable to sunlight. Also, Hobgoblins have very thick skin. They can also see in the dark.
Minotaur
Minotaurs are the largest of the races, ranging up to 7-8 feet in height. They are stronger than any other race, and almost as durable as the dwarves. Minotaurs are very versatile, but will not steal from other races, so thievery as a profession is out. But by and large, minotaurs prefer to be what they were born to be: a Warrior!
From their birth, minotaurs are trained for strength, cunning, and intelligence. They believe that the weak should perish and that might proves right. It is to them, the natural process of life.
Kender
Kender can't really be defined. They are a short, skinny little race that don't seem to stop talking. They all posess a number 'unique' qualities, which often get them in trouble with the other races. Basically, Kender are unwitting thieves (but they get angry if you call them that). Items (usually someone else's) just seem to fall into their pockets for no apparent reason. And when confronted with the 'theft' they will profess to be just 'guarding' the item in question for its real owner until they can be found. They trully don't mean any harm, things just happen. Kender are completely immune to fear of any sort, and dangerous situations are usually just another 'neat' thing that happened today.
Gnome
Gnomes live in Mount Nevermind, on the isle of Sancrist. Gnomes are the tinkerers of Krynn, designing grand machines for every imaginable task. Distant cousins of the dwarves, gnomes who chased after the Graygem are rumored to have been transformed from gnomes into dwarves and kender, depending on whether they coveted the stone or were curious about it. Gnomes live for approximately 350 years.
Ogre
Ogres stand between 8 and 9 feet tall. Their skin is a dull yellow, covered
with patches of hair, scars, blotches, even pustules. Some ogres are quite
obese, but many are lean. Ogres develop a hunched over posture due to their
great height and as such walk stooped, it is a rare ogre that stands
straight. Almost all ogres have black hair that is worn long, the less
civilized ogres leave it uncombed and unclean.
Ogres were a combination of leather and animal hides, cloaked with thick furs
for those in the mountainous regions or arctic areas like the Icereach. Love
of jewelry and other body ornamentation is common throughout all ogres
regardless of class standing or wealth. Ritual scarring and piecings are
common and extremely prevalent in the clerical and magi ogres.
Although most ogres are the standard dim-witted oafs, there are many,
especially in larger ogre communities, who are quite intellectual. These will
generally be leaders, clergy and magi. Many ogres have a racial hatred of
humans ever since the uprising which took their human slaves from them, and
tore their great empire asunder.
